I was going to stock some of these in my 85gal tank, and went into my LFS today to buy some (They only had Royal Black Emperors). He advised me that they were quite "nippy", but when I'd read up on them, everyone rates them as peaceful....which is why I wanted them in the first place.

Needless to say, I didn't take them as I'm stocking the fish with a male Betta...so I thought i'd research a bit more first.

Some sites say to keep these in a ratio of 3 (1m, 2f), but I would prefer to keep around 10 if they're ok.

Any advice please? Slightly confused!

I've got Emperor tetras(Nematobrycon palmeri) and they're very peaceful; the Black Emperor is just a colour variety. It's the Blue Emperors (Inpaichthys kerri) that can be nippy. Do be aware that they're one of the few egg laying fish that will breed and raise fry in a normal community tank; in fact the only reason I have them is because my mum was getting over run with them!

They are very easy to sex though; the males have a bright blue eye, like a neon tetra colour, whilst the females have green eyes :) They're a very nice fish; quite large though; mine are about 3" so do make sure you have the room for them. (Edit; just noticed you have a large tank! sorry; you do have the room!)
