I own this same filter and it does that every once in a while. It usually happens if the electricity goes out and then comes back on. IMO it's because the inflow isn't keeping up with the outflow. If you don't take care of this it will burn the motor up because the water flowing over the motor housing is what keeps it cool. I just get a plastic cup and start puring water into the middle of the unit (where the pump pours the water in) as fast as I can and keep doing this until it it stops- usually within a few minutes. I then wait a minute to make sure it keeps running smoothly. It used to take a while to get it to start running right again, but now that I have figured it out, I fix it as soon as I hear it messing up and it only takes a few minutes. HTH!
