I just caught my molly out of my 40 g and put it in my 5g cause she's due to have her second lot of fry.
I just noticed, after moving her, that her mouth is stuck open. I don't know if she cant shut it or if she wont. she doesn't look too happy about it tho. what have I done???? I tried to shut it gently but it didn't work and I don't want to hurt her. Please help me!! :-( :-(

With my experences with mollies about to drop, is if they r under stress I have frozen brine shrimp and i give the a small piece of that, if she doesn't calm down, I put here back in the main tank, if u watch u can catch a bunch of the fry, before being eat... I would rather lose some fry then my momma fish. I have never seen a fish mouth get stuck open, so srry no help there.

At the pet store here they just got some fish in. One of it's mouth was stuck open and wouldn't shut. Also it was breathing heavily. We talked to the owner, he really cares/knows about his fish, and he said that it looked like some sort of disease. (He stopped selling fish outta that tank, don't worry. :) ) I'll ask him today how he treated and what it was.

From what I've read if a fish cant open it's mouth it can be for the following reasons:

There may be something stuck in its mouth (stone, food etc). It may be possible for u to remove it but if not seek vets advice.

Lower jaw may be dislocated. Vet can help sometimes.

Tumour (but doesnt sound like that will be right in your situ)

Did you manage to catch her quite easily?

SUNFLOWER: shE WAS hard to catch. like most fast fishies. tha's why I thought I'd squashed her mouth out of place. I took her out of the water in my hand for a couple of seconds and put her mouth back. I think it may have been dislocated like you said. I put a towel over the tank to keep out light and thismorning and 2nite, she's fine. she's swimming around now and she's still pregnant so I think she may be ok. Thankyou for your advice. I'll be more careful catching my fish next time I think.
