I walked into my computer room this morning to discover Afriel floating on his side at the top of his tank!! He was perfectly fine yesterday! I sort of tapped the glass and he started swimming upside-down
Could this be swimbladder disorder?? What should I do??

Edit: He reacts when he sees me and everything, but he can't seem to swim upright.

One of my doubletails has a problem with his buoyancy. The LFS was feeding him brine shrimp which is rumored to have an effect on the swim bladder. He's gotten much better since I bought him, and I really watch how much he's fed. I feed him a cooked pea once a week, and he only gets 1-2 pellets (soaked prior to feeding) a day.

Your betta sounds like his case is much more serious. How long have you had him, and have you noticed any problems before? Have you been feeding him brine shrimp? If so, then I suggest you stop.

I'm not a fan of medication, so I'm unable to recommend any medicated treatment. Try fasting the little guy for a day or two, then give him a cooked pea. Don't feed him much, because overfeeding is said to have a bad affect on swim bladder. Some people give their bettas salt baths when a problem like this arises, though I do not.

There's no one way to treat this problem, as it can be caused by many different things. Good luck.

Bangin: He has never had any problems before... and I would know, I take a close look at all my babies every single day. I've had him about a year and never once fed him any freeze-dried foods. He has been on a diet of 3-4 Hikari Betta Bio-Gold pellets a day (just like all my other bettas.)
I didn't feed him today and won't tomorrow either if this doesn't clear up :/
I'm really worried about him... he's my favourite.

What i have done in the past and worked with the fish living another couple of years is getting a tetracyclen tablet, Swimbladder or not, thats what i did when he was swimming on his side then about 30 min. he was fine.

NO kidding, worth a shot

I just put some Bettamax in with him. I know it's not really made to treat swimbladder, but I can't just sit here and do nothing...
All the LFS are closed at this time of day, so I can't run out and get anything else until tomorrow.

Is your computer room at home or in an office? I'm only asking because maybe... maybe someone might have put something in his water to make him feel sick, if he was at work perhaps do complete water change incase water is contaminated.

I am crossing my fingers for your babies too , they are magnificant !!

I Hope he gets Better. Fingers Crossed

Afriel is my Fave, of your Bettas.

Thanks for all the well-wishes everyone, but I'm afraid things didn't end well. Afriel appears to have tried to anchor himself under his plant so he could get comfortable during the night, and instead got himself tangled and drowned :-(
The leaves on the plant or short and he could have easily freed himself under normal circumstances, but with his movement being impared he was trapped. I miss him already, but at least I have plenty of pictures to remember him by.

Hi Synirr

I'm so sorry to hear about Afriel. :byebye: He's in fishy heaven now.
