woke up this morning and my 75 gal is missing 25% of the water.....can only b two things....a leak or the filter....the only thing is ...nothing seeems to be wet except the carpet on the floor....my stand is made of wood and theres no sign of wet wood of any leak dripping to the carpet....same thing with filter...no signs of leaks or anything.....maybe the leak is at the top of the tank and it leaked past the point and stopped....gonna try n fill it with water and see if i see a leak...

any ideas ???? HELP

Well I'd certainly be suspicious that the wet carpet somehow came from the 25% of water missing from the 75g tank   good grief!

Your deductions sound reasonable to me.. one must think of the tank, the filter box, the filter tubing, any areas of overhang of the hood, airlines, all sorts of things, though tank and filter stand out. If its small enough that its stream has had time to dry out then there's not much else you could do but slowly refill while everyone you can muster examines various places with flashlights and hands as necessary I guess. Perhaps the old-timers here will advise against this though and say you should be concerned in a more major way and prepare for dismantling (yipes! ) lets hope they will come along and speak up!

do you have an airpump at around the height of the new water level? or an air pipe with a join of some description at that point? I have heard of this exact scenario when an air pump switched off for whatever reason and the water backed up to the lowest point because a one way valve was not fitted. In my collegues case they lost 75% of their tank water...

Do you have a condensation tray across the top of the tank?

It may be worth posting a couple of general pics of your layout to help the others pinpoint the problem.

Also without trying to sound alarmist have you checked the floor under the carpet? 20 or so gal of water could play havoc on floorboards/soaked into walls?

One way to rule out the tank (or find the leak spot) would be to tape some paper in a continuous strip all the way around the tank, including the back. Draw a line all the way round with a marker pen. If there's a leak somewhere, it'll soak the paper in that area, and you'll see where the pen mark has smudged.

Just be wary of false positives from condensation runs!

I would think if water level is where filter inlet is then that is your answer! Otherwise it could be the tank but I bet it's the filter system.

yeah i think it must be the filter...its a fluval 405....but i dont see any holes or leaks anywhere....ive filled the tank with water since then and it has not leaked anything in the last 3 days....so it must be the filter....still stumped thou...

guys we are talking 18 and 3/4 gallons of water here or approx 65 liters of water surly this would leave serious anount of water every where and considerable damage.

fluval 405 are notorious for having dodgy seals although saying this if it was the filter box trust me there would be evidence everywhere i have recently had to sort out a tank after a major problem that resulted in a new carpet

estimated loss of water was 9 gallon and the area of damaged was 24 sq feet of carpet

the only thing i can think of is what is your floor made of as it could be sinking below the floor level and thus not detecable
