I have had a letter from the electric company, advising that they are going to cut off my electric supply due to maitenence if my area... I have 3 6ft tanks, eacj with loads of fish sum big sum small. the cold waters will live, but the bigger breeds may have trouble as the obviously consume more oxygen.. heat wise and oxygen wise im really worried for... heat i can possibly solve with 2 ltr plastic bottles and plce in the tank.. But wot about oxygen, ive learned that oxygen tablet are crap. and if i blow into the tank, that would just make the tank have more Co2.. i cannot find a battery powerd pump anywhere, and i have`nt got a power generator.. and it happeneing this wenesday. So im kinda stressed at the moment.. Any advice on a making a pump?? thx  :(

first, how long is the power going to be off for?, if its only a few hours there is nothing to panic about.
second, heat can be easily solved by wrapping a duvet/blanket around the tank.
third, if you have a pump to inflate bicycle tyres maybe you could use it to oxygenate the tank.

With the value of some of the fish you keep i would strongly advise hiring a generator for the day to run the filters in your tanks, heat shouldnt be a problem on tanks that size as they cool very slowly (just make sure there is no cold draughts in the room). The cost of a generator shouldnt be to much, the firm i use for work charge about £15 a day for a small one which should be powerful to run the filters on 3 tanks.

try hewden or HSS. these supply large generators although you may need to step up the voltage etc and the plugs may be different etc.

With the power being disconnected for 8 hrs i`m just worried.. I think the option of hiribg generator would be the best option.. Thx u all for the advice.. ;)

Not sure if they are available in your area, but you could try the local Auto supply store for a small emergency power source that charges from the car battery and supposed to be good for 100 hours before needing a recharge. They are relatively inexpensive and would be good to keep around for future emergencys.

Got to agree with the generator. It is not the heat or the O2, it is the filters that would be my concern. If the electricity company say 8 hours, (yeah, like right!), the filters will start loosing beneficial bacteria. If it's as little as £15, I wouldn't hesitate.

I WOULD REALLY GET THE GENRATOR THING. THE AIR TABLETS MIGHT WORK.I DONT NO I NEVER USED THEM.

GOOD LUCK

p.s seening that i tryed to help you. whenever i have a topic posted anywhere can you please try to help me. thank you!

hi get on to ur electric board tell them that ur fish will only last a hour without filters etc and if use loose anything u will be claiming off them
they then should offer to borrow u a generator free
my friend did this
just tell them u have got a good few 100 pounds of fish

cheers ritchie :p

We had big wind storms in my town in winter!!
I freaked out that my fish would freeze!!
I covered them in a couple of blankets to keep them warm, and as i still had warm water in the tap (for a while) a used a hot water bottle in a fish bag (you get from fish shops when you buy a fish) and put that in the tank to keep the temperature up.
The temperature ended up dropping only a few degrees.
That kept them warm but i was really worried about the oxygen in the tank.
Everywhere was sold out of battery powered pumps!!
There was nothing i could do but keep them warm
The power was off for a day and a bit, i didnt loose any fish thankfully
even with out aeration.
I think your fish will be fine for 8 hours :)
Hope this helped :)

8 hours will usually be just that (at least only one day).
Another option is getting a UPS (computer batteries). a decent ups should run an air pump and heater for some time. one air stone under the heater... no, not the best but a more economic version of the generator and one that would save you in the future if you had an unexpected loss of power.

Seriously, the power company should start to learn how to maintain their stuff in summer rather than in the middle of winter. Maybe they're preparing for the increased air-con usage next year...

Maybe try a DIY generator? I have a crazy fantasy of how it works...
