Elephant Fish?

Elephant nose? Dont no a great deal except i think they are pretty shy and are only seen every now and then as they dont breed in captivity...

I've seen a few, think they get quite big.
Fancied getting some myself.

Yea ive seen them a few times. I thought about getting them but i dont think they would do well with my cichlids. :hey:

My local LFS has some Elephant Fish in there, anyone know anything about them?

Hi

I kept them about 12 years ago and the only thing I can remember about them is that they are shy fish and

prone to whitespot. Bur otherwise beautyful fish.

Oh yaeh i think they are also scale less much like clown loaches so whitespot would be a slight problem.

I keep drooling over these in the shop, but am put off by the thought that they are said to be very sensitive to water quality, timid and easily outcompeted for food, and need soft substrate and lots of space to establish territories. Lovely fish, though. I'm just not ready for them.

They get about 9 inches in captivity, shy, sometimes aggressive, and slightly predatory. The are somewhat sensitive to water quality, and thrive in acidic waters. Carnivorus. They use weak electrical pulses to detect foods, the same method is used by knife fish. They come from moderate flowing waters in Africa. They have a down turned mouth for picking up small aquatic invertebrates and fish. There is also a very similar species named down poker (Campylomormyrus rhynchophorus), from which I understand is near identical in apperance and care but requires highly acidc waters, a pH of 5 I believe.

Well Guys/ Gals,

I have three of these, they are so cute, just like mini dolphins.
Mine are shy, but come out quite alot, and are not relly outcompeted for food, they live with angels and a ghost knife, and I have never had any problems.

But they do need lots of hiding space, in fact mine share the caves with the plecs lol.

Mells:D

Alot of people say they look like whales or dolphins, I cant see the slightest resemblence myself. (this is also true for knife fish :S , i guess i dont use my imagination enough :) ) Oh yeah and another quick note, they require tons of hiding places and caves. Ghost tubes and pvc pipes seem to work best, espically when placed under the gravel. or another thing would be a ghost tube with gravel, chips of wood, and other natural decor siliconed to the outside to reduce the light, looks good too.
