Electricity Outtage!

my electricity was out for about an hour and a half and i have 9 tanks... luckily everyone is alive and good! very scary when you don't know how long it's going to be off when u have fish and the filter is off!!

mine was off for about nan hour and a half as wel today! mine are good too.

The same happen to me this last winter we lost power due to storms and it was for 3 days!! I was able to keep my tank warm enough by taking 2 masson jars and putting hand warmers in them then sealing the jars and putting them in the tank my cichlids and pleco then stayed near the jars to stay warm so this is advice for any who come across power outtages.

Were they gas or battery hand warmers? I live down in New Orleans burbs so I don't have to fool with hand warmers too often but I'm curious...

However, I did go 15 days with no power and 5 weeks with no useable water following Hurricane Katrina. Me and all of my fish in three tanks made it. I did hourly manual partial filtering of the tanks by using a 32oz cup to pour tank water through my HOB's and canister filters to keep the bacteria alive. The waterfall from the HOB's also aided with gas exchange due to the surface agitation. I also had my computer's UPS that I would recharge on a friends car 120 volt inverter and run the filters at night for 5 minutes before I went to bed to give them really good filtration and oxygenization before I slept a few hours. I would also run them off the UPS during the day if I knew my friend was coming by so I could recharge the UPS. I now have UPS's on all of my tanks with at least one filter plugged in the battery backup. They won't last long with heaters and lights plugged in them though. They'll get your filters through most short term electrical outages though.

they werent gas or battery warmers they are these little pouches u buy at the store with something in them that when u activate them they warm up so u can put them in you pocket or gloves to keep your hands or whatever warm.
