hey i have a 90 gallon with 5 discus and a couple loaches and a pleco. Could i put a electric blue jack dempsey in there. At the pet store they have a couple full grown blue dempsys with rainbow fish and groamies (sp?) And there isnt any agression.

unless oyu want your tank to become discus soup, I'd say no

they're wayyyy too agressive for discus

thats a seriously bad idea! just cuz because the pet shop is doing something stupid does'nt mean u'll get away with it. that pet shop oviously knows nothing about tho's fish and will suffer the consequences when they start killing the other fish in that tank.

There are very few cichlids that would work with Discus and most certainly nothing aggressive and active like a JD. Look carefully at the type of fish the Discus are and choose something that would match their nature. In a 90 gallon there's room to add something like Angels or Rams, but they do and show best as the only cichlid species in the tank. I'd add something different and compatible, like a nice group of cardinals or something.

another note to take into consideration, while because of the discus the water would have to be top notch. so your already ahead of the game there, I really don't recommend people getting blue dempseys because of the line breeding that has taken place within the species most people just end up with a very expensive dead fish. here in the US they generally go for 10 dollars an inch.

Holy s***, lucky you! I found a 1.5'' one at my LFS that was listed for $139.99. It was a beautiful fish, sparkling blue. Are they still Cichlasoma octofaciatus, or are they a hybrid? One thing that I noticed is that the little guy dashed for cover whenever a patron approached. Definetly not something a normal JD would do. At least not my girl, anyways. The Electric JD at the LFS is starting to get accustomed to me, so i can finally see it in all of its glory.

blue demps are a line bred verson of the regular JD, nothing more or nothing less. in fact, Jeff Rapps had a DNA test run just to put the very issue to rest and it was established that they are not a hybird through those tests. they are not as agressive as the regular JD, but can still lay the smack down on a fish. they are fragile though very fragile, most people have had limited success with keeping them almost like a discus, keeping the water just as pristine, and with a higher temp around 82 F. but still it is just too much to pay for a fish that is probably going to die because of the line breeding it seems that they have a weaker immune system and that most of them end up dying

Correct me if wrong, but Im pretty sure that electric blue demseys are hybrids. And kind of rember reading that because of that they have a shorter lifespan than a normal dempsey :/ I could be wrong though. Its been a while since ive read up on any Fresh water fish.
