Hi - How often should I clean my new Ehiem external filter???

I only clean mine when i notice a significant flow reduction. so far twice in 8 months.

When it needs it. If you have a spray bar or similar return, watch and see how far the spray goes, when it gets noticeably less, give it a clean.

I find I am having to flush the pipes out nearly every week as they get clogged, and it still has the sponge protector on the end.

I clean mine out every month or two regardless of whether it 'needs' it. The way I see it, waste in the filter is waste in the aquarium water. Plus a well maintained filter will last that much longer.
