Eheim Jager 300w Heater

This depends upon the increase desired above the room temperature. 5 watts per gallon is about average, with a cooler tank in a warmer room you could go as low as 2 wpg. 300watts will heat 1000 liters if you have a warmer room, but the heater will be running almost constantly.

You could get by with 300 watts heating 1000 liters in a cooler room is you insulate the tank. Styro underneath and on 3 sides, as well as on top.

you want 3 x 300watt heaters for that size tank if you live anywhere in the southern half of Australia. The only exception being if you fully insulate the tank with polystyrene foam like Tolak suggested. Even then I would run at least 2 x 300w heaters on it. Better still if the tank is in a fishroom, then just use a gas or electric heater to heat the room.

thanks alot Tolak, I am wanting to heat a 4x2x2, how many litres does this hold? this is the size tank i am wishing to heat up and my fish shed temp is kept at 28C and my tank average is around 26C i also run a gas heater as my main source of heat in my fish room.

edit......i am mainly using the heaters just incase my gas heater fails, i have the heaters set at 24 so if the tanks drops below that the heaters will go on!

To work out the volume of water in the tank
measure Length x Width x Height in cm
divide by 1000
equals volume in litres

When measuring the height, measure from the top of the gravel to the top of the water level. If you have big rocks or driftwood in the tank, remove them before measuring the height.

the 4x2x2ft tank holds about 400litres (about 100gallons) of water without anything else in it. You can use 1 x 300watt heater for it or 2 x 200watt heaters. If your fishroom is at 28C then 1 heater should be enough to raise the temp up to 30C for discus. If you aren't keeping discus then don't bother heating it and just leave it on 26C.

if you are using them as a back-up system in case of primary heater failure, then 1 x 200watt heater set on 22 or 24C would be fine. You can have heaters in the bottom tanks and they will warm the entire room due to the warmth rising upwards. There is no need to heat the top tanks. I used to heat half the bottom tanks in my room and that was sufficient to keep my fish room at 22C over winter.

As above i run a pair of 200w heaters on a 300L. The heaters dont need to work so hard and i dont end up with hot/cold spots in the tank. The standard 300w watt heater that come with the tank wouldnt keep the water at constant temp @ around 4-5 ºc above room temp. The pair of 200w heaters also work out cheaper to run too
