Hi all,im after a new heater and was looking at a Eheim 125w for my 165 litre tank,i rang the local lfs to ask if they had any and he said they dont sell them anymore because he had to many comebacks with them. Just wanted to know if anyone experienced any problems or is he just bulling me so i buy something he actually sells?

Many Thanks
Ian

I use eheim heaters in every one of my tanks. Never had a problem. (total tanks = 6)

Thanks Nemo, this is the heater i was looking at its actually a Jager heater but apparently are part of the Eheim Aquatic Products Jager Heater

Are these the type you have?

Thanks
Ian

That is a very small heater for a tank that size Fats. I would expect to have at least 1.25W per litre of tank capacity and your selection is less than 1 W per litre.

Eheim jager i bought had issues, set it at 24c but both my thermometers were displaying 30c!

Put my rena heater in at 24c my thermometers read 25c.

Jager was abit out.

The Jager heaters are rated for larger water volumes than most heaters - I've ordered a 300w one for my 6x2x2 and it is claimed that the 300w heater is enough for this size tank (I'll see what happens when it arrives - I am a bit sceptical) so a 125w will be rated for about a 300l tank. I think this may be why people are finding they overheat the tanks if they go by 'standard' ratings.

many heaters are out on their displayed scale. but, mostly, that's not a problem. we all have a thermometer in the tank, too, don't we. simply use that to judge the heater settings.
as for how big an heater you need. well i can confirm a 150w is well up to heating a180l tank, and it is on for very short periods. indicating it has capacity to spare.

initially a fell for the "that heater is not big enough" cry. so i have 2 150w heaters in my tank. one is never switched on (though it is on at the mains). a 150w will heat my tank to 75f and if i need will drive it up to 80f (i have had no need to see if it will go any higher). the other major benifit of lower power heaters is, safety. a smaller heater is less able to boil your fish if the stat sticks on.

The only problem l can see with using a heater in a Eheim is " What happens if it should stop working". you may have to send the whole lot away for repair, then what are you going to use for a filter when it is away. With these small heaters they take up very little space. Another point to look at is the price of an Eheim with heater is very expensive. At the moment Charterhouse Aquatics (info@charterhouse-aquatics.co.uk) are having a sale l have bought from them and there postal service is very good.

Hi Oldman47,i was just going of what Jager listed for that size heater, they say the 125w is for 150-200 litres. Apparently they are quite long heaters so require less wattage per litre..so they claim. I have a 200w heater in there at the moment but even on the lowest setting it is hitting 80f. Not sure if its faulty or to big for the tank. The guy at the lfs told me you dont need to have one that high if you taking into account the room temperature aswell. Who would of thought trying to buy a heater would be this difficult :D . Do i go for what the manufacturer recommendeds for there heaters or something slightly lower? :S

Thanks
Ian

Hi Boboboy, is that 150w in the Jager or is that any heater. What brand heater are you running? ive just been looking at the rena smart heaters does anyone know if there anygood?

Thanks
Ian

They did have a run of some bad heaters some time ago. Ebo-Jager was bought by Eheim, renamed to Jager, and with the subsequent company restructure there were some production issues. The old green Ebo-Jagers run seemingly forever, the newer blue Ebo-Jagers aren't bad, many places stopped selling them for a while after the rename to Jager when problems surfaced.

Look into the Marineland Visi-Therm heaters, which are of good quality.

A simple statement of how I feel about it is this:
A heater needs to be big enough for my tank under any circumstances that I am likely to encounter. If my tank is located in a typical room, it may need as much as 5 WPG to provide enough heat. If I allow that the heater be at least 5 WPG or 1.25 WPL, it will be big enough for a normal room. In that situation, I watch my tanks' temperature to make sure everything is all right. Any condition less than ideal means a larger heater than the "ideal" heater size.

my heaters are "aqua Blueclime". not one of the top brands. I'd have a smart heater, if i needed a new one. and i could have two :hyper:, as i run two externals.

perhaps the ambient temperature, or tanks are kept at, has something to do with this. many of our "basic" rules, were set many years ago, things have changed. unfortunately, a few, have problems grasping this.
you can, with no problems, "follow the book". or use the experience of others to move the hobby on. both systems work, but only one allows progression. forums were set up to help the second option.

Hi again, thanks for all your advice i am going to sort one out this week,at the moment ive just got my other one running on a timer to switch on and off so it doesn't boil my fish ive monitored and it seems to be keeping a steady temperature. I will let you know how i get on.

Thank to all
Ian
