Hi everyone,

Sat here thinking that i need to 'upgrade' my fluval 405, it doesnt really seem to be doing the job for me - water's not crystal clear and when i've had to service it the amount of gunk that comes out of the ribbed pipes is shocking.

Been looking at the eheim external range, namely the 2217 or the 2075.

Price wise the 2217 seem's to win, having a quick look you can get it for about £90 with media and delivery - while the 2075 being a newer model can be had for about £150 (price doesnt really matter, just want the better model).

There does seem to be quite a few horror story's about the 2075 pump housing leaking though, a design fault that apparently has been acknowledged by eheim - anyone know if that problem was just on the earlier models an is now fixed..? The classic 2217 on the other hand, seem's to be a proper work horse - im just concerned that it maybe a little 'old school' now.

If anyone has any experience on either, be great to hear your input.

All the best nick.

In my opinion, Eheims are the very best! :good:

I have the pro 3 myself, and it works allright. It's a bit difficult to start at first. My husband wanted to have it so he gets to deal with it. Mine hasn't leaked and gets it's job nicely done.

Both are good, but many people say that in the long run classics may be a bit better with less flaws.

Rude, and off-topic. :grr:

Tetratec 1200 wouldn't handle my tank anyway, it's too small. :p

How is it rude? serious lack humour on this forum of late, off topic not really maybe i should spend more time on my reply.

The filters were very good in their day but of late serious quilty control has let them down. I just suggesting with a bit of homour that the op looks into other filter bang for buck. if they are hell bent on the brand fair play to them :good:

what tank you got out interst love big tank

It's quite a tricky decision, they both seem to be good in there own right - lot of posts about the pump housing on the 2075 though.

I have a 2215. It certainly does the job. It filters. Quietly. Called classic for a reason!

Just a thought why dont you become a proper fish keper and get a tetratec 1200 :hey: :good:
Lol been looking at pretty much every type of external out there, seem's that depending on how hard you look there's people that have had good an bad experiences with every type of external.

This fluval is the second external that i've had within 12 months (the other was a allpondsolution external), buy cheap buy twice is all ive got to say lol.

Rather spend some cash once and for all an get something decent. :good:

It's both about luck and how you maintain your external filters - you can get a good one or a bad one, no matter what the brand!

I've also heard horror stories about external filters leaking and emptying half the tank while doing that, so here's hoping... :D I think that the most important thing about maintaining external filters in the long run to prevent leaks is to replace the sealants before they are too weary. :good:

I have 2 Eheim 2234's that have been filtering my tank for about 11 months so far. In my opinion if you buy something that was poorly made the problem will rear it's ugly head within the first 3 months. The Eheim box has "Made in Germany" plastered all over it. The Eheim website claims the 2234 is "Made in Germany". I think Eheim does the same thing the company I work for does. We design and manufacture our products in our country, in my case the U.S., Eheim in Germany, and ship them overseas to be assembled in China or Taiwan to take advantage of the cheap labor and make our executives rich. As long as they are assembled to our specifications we get quality product delivered to our customers. The build quality of my Eheims appear to be very high. They are so quiet I have to put my hand on them to assure myself they are running. They keep my water crystal clear, hold a lot of media and I have had no problems at all. They come with a 3 year warranty so that's a plus. But that's just my experience. The person who picked the Eheim box behind mine could have taken his home and found it to have a dead motor. Anything is possible.

for the record. Eheims that say made in Germany ARE, or were. any of the Pro, Pro2 and classics, were all only made in Germany.

the late Pro 3's and Ecco's were all made in China.

it tends to be safe to buy Pro, Pro2, Pro3 (2080) ( the 2080 is made in China, i think, but its teething problem are all gone. as such its one of the best filters you can buy)
there are a few still new about. but most are now second hand. not really a problem as the Greman made Eheims last for ever. and any broken parts are readily available.

personally i'd steer well clear of the NEW PRO 3's. they do seem to have problems.

as such I'd suggest the 2217. or a PRO2 2226.

as for the Tetra, being used by real fishkeepers?
that's more often said about Eheims units. its more true too.

if i had the money and wasnt concerned about it, id go eheim every time. i had a classic 2213, and it was pukka. i now have an ex1200, and while its good, the eheim was a lot easier to clean, and certainly felt better quality. however im poor and needed a bigger filter, so the big eheims were out of my price range. the ex1200 does the job, and theres certainly nothing 'wrong' with it. the customer care is also very good, as i recently found out. to be honest if money was no object id take eheim over any other filter made.

Been reading up so so so much about eheims, starting to feel like a sales rep lol.

The 'classic range' nobody seems to have a bad word to say about them. Quite/fairly cheap to buy, and seemingly ultra reliable - seem's to be a safe bet to buy. The newer models (excluding the 2080), seem to have had a few issues shall we say lol.

I honestly couldn't have put it better myself. Ive had my 2215 running since jan of 09. Not only is it silent but you can tailor the bac levels/media because it doesn't have the pesky baskets which personally I can't stand. Before I got my ehiem 2215 I had a tetra tec 1200 and after a couple of days of using it I sent it back for the ehiem. No comparing the two really.

*EDIT*

lol I just had a quick read throughas to who built it. You can't go wrong with them regardless! And besides I can grantee you that 99.9% of the products you own right now have at least one component that was made in china. From your smart phone to your car or the bus/train/boat/tram you take to work.

Because in the bigger scheme of things China is the manufacturing capital of the world lol. Unscrew/Open your pc/laptop/ipad or whatever you're using to access this forum/read this post and I guarantee you...
