I just came back from my lfs and have been quoted on a couple aquariums. A 3FT long 165L and a 4FT long 220L.

If I am going to get the 4FT(more than likely)

Im going to buy a Eheim cannister filter as recommend and since money isnt an issue. I was just wondering if I should get Eheim Classic 2213 or the Eheim Classic 2215.

Here are some quick stats for each

Eheim Classic 2213

Power: 8W

Canister Volume: 3.5 L

The unit's output is 440 L/h.

Dimensions : (W)160mm x (H)355 mm

The Eheim Classic 2213 is rated for aquariums up to 250L.

Eheim Classic 2215

Power: 15W

Canister Volume: 4.8 L

Dimensions : (W)185mm x (H)370mm

The Eheim Classic 2215 is rated for aquariums up to 350L.

It is going in my bedroom so I want as little noise as possible, and Im thinking a motor that uses 8 watts will be quiter than the 15w motor, but Im not sure on that. On the other hand having the 2215 might be better incase I overstock my tank a little the extra filtration might be better? And it is larger so i guess it would hold more bacteria to break down ammonia and nitrites quicker, right?

Rob,

I have a 2215 and like all Eheims it is very quiet.

Go for the 2215, the bigger the better. You can't over filter the water plus the eheims are really quiet, I run a 2213 on my Rio and that is in the living room.

Once all the air has run through the machine is hardly noticeable.

yeah I think im going to go for the 2215. its only $45(AUD) extra.

Is there a way you can cover the little motor that is on top of the cannister with something or will that overheat it by not letting it breath?

I have finally heard some negative points about the eheims, I was just wondering if some of you could clarify on this.

Apparently they are hard to prime (which I dont know what that exactly means so I someone could explain that will be great). So if you dont prime them properly they arent as quiet as they are suppose to be. Also when cleaning them every 6months water goes every when un clipping the hoses or something.

So yeah if you have any or have used them could you let me know if this is true or not. Thanks, Rob

i use eheim classic 2215 and 2217 and have a spare 2213 exellent filters v.quiet easy to use. my 2213 i have had for more than 10 years and had no problems with any of them. I would also go for the biggest filter you can never have too much filteration. Tetratec has also had alot of good reviews and v.reasonably priced and easy to use.
Classics are not self priming but this has never been a problem for me i use the taps on it and when i turn it back on as it still has water in pipe it carrys on and fills back up. it is only the first time i use it i have to suck on outlet pipe to get things going. if you use the taps you can get with them water will not go everywhere either you just turn taps off disconect and you are away.
