Eheim Filter

Me and my boyfriend (fellow forum member Edge) have just bought a second hand tank and cabinet from eBay, and when Edge collected it the seller told him it also included a filter. When we checked inside the cabinet we found a large external filter; an Eheim Professional. The label is a bit worn but I think it's the 2227 model. Does anybody have one of these filters, as I am unsure how to set it up. It has inlet and outlet tubes, but also a third tube coming out of the top. Sorry to sound a little stupid but we've only used ever small HOB filters. Any advice would be appreciated.

EDIT: Also, will this be sufficient to filter the tank; 40" x 18" x 24". Thanks

Can`t offer any advice though - albeit I have a 2224 and it`s bbbbbbbrilliant !

Yes it's the wet/dry filter 2227 Pro. Someone else directed me to the manuals but thanks both for the replies. After reading through the manual I'm still not sure what to do with the third pipe, the small one. Also, there was no filter medium supplied, is it true that you can only use the Eheim media? Thanks again
