I've just acquired a eheim professional 'type 2227' external filter. Now firstly, is it suitable to use on my 180L tank? If so, how does it work/connect, I have no manual or anything with it, and on;ly ever used internal filters. So basically I have no idea what to do with it! lol.Any help/information on it would be appreciated.

Yes it fine for your tank.

You just place put the inlet and outlet pipes in the tank and presto :D

You can get manuals etc from the main site

Thanks bigpig, thats briliant! Just tried it out in the sink, with some garden hose coz I have to order the proper pipes for it... I dont know if the wrong pipes is causing it, but it fills up fine then chucks it back out fine but once the outlet is opened and the water comes out it doesn't refil again unless you turn it off. Any ideas?

Probably the hoses and position of the filter and no enough water in the sink.I Belive the filter needs a vacuum to fill the can then the pump pushes the water back into the tank

well worth taking the filter top off and filling it to near top with water. helps the process. Don't start with empty canister

Erm, no, start with an empty canister or you get air locks IME ;)

Empty everything. Position the filter benieth the tank and position the inlet and outlet where you want them in the tank. Next, plumb up by running hoses from each inlet/outlet set to the filters inlet/outlet connector. Keep the hoses as short as possible to get the most possible flow when in operation :good: Now check that both taps are open. If it's a Pro2, press the self-prime button a few times, for a Pro1 you will have to suck the outlet at this point. (I can't remember if the 2227 is a Pro1/2, sorry  ) Now go and make a cup of tea (very important that bit) while the filter fills up and "primes". Now, once full (after about 2-5 mins) plug it in and off it should go. After a few moments of funny noises if should all settle down :good:

All the best

Erm no no
yes your way works. I found with my eheim it never fills correctly. so i found trick was to fill it up, open in take. turn on and open out.
air gets pushed out thats in the pipes as does your way.

This was the way I did it in the sink (with the tap running constant)... It filled up fine after a lil suck. I didn't make the cup of tea tho.. so maybe thats where I went wrong! lol. Once it filled up, I opened the outlet, switched it on at the mains... the outlet threw a load of water out nicely, so nicely that it emptied the filter in about a minute, then a load of funny noises started. I took the inlet pipe off the filter.. it was still syphoning fine, but it would seem not fast enough to keep up with the outlet. as soon as I switched the mains off, it filled straight back up again.

I dontk now if it was becasue the hole in the hose pipe wasn't big enough, or maybe liek someone said not enough water in the sink, or if the filter is just broken lol.
I suppose I'll have to order the right hoses and give it a go on the tank instead!
