Eheim Classic 2215

I have had an Eheim 2215 which has been set up for a month or so, and I want to make sure its all clean and working properly - I tried to get the lid off yesterday to clean the sponges and remove the carbon filter.

I couldn't budge the lid at all the suction was far too strong.

Can someone give me simple instructions on how to do this please?
I'm guessing I've got to remove and drain the pipes and move the whole thing to the sink and drain it to release the suction?
Any tips very welcome!

turn off the power and make sure one of the valves on the hose is open because if its closed it will be air tight and V. difficult to open
