Hi....my buddy got out of the aquarium hobby and gave me his Eheim canister 2213. I"m curious about a few things for those who use it and hope you can answer a few questions:]
1) Do you use the Ehfimech/substrat or do you create/make your own media? If so , what brands do you like?
2) My buddy recommended Biochem Stars....anyone use this?
3) Eheim's site doesn't specifically say how much of each to add...ie, mechanical (Ehfimech), biologic (substrat), etc...how much do you add to the canister?
4) I presently have an AquaClear 70 for my 46 gallon FW. It gets rave reviews here and I've been happy with it so far tho' I'm wondering if I am at it's limits for filtration (300gph). My buddy keeps telling me that this filter would do much better. Thanks for all your input. Just getting some background because I would have to invest in new tubing, plumbing and media. SH

I personally would ( and do ) use Eheim filter media, I believe the filters only as good as the media thats inside. I found THIS website which I think will help you choose your media. HTH.

I have two ehiem canisters and also use the ehiem filter media.

Steehealr, I see banana lilly in your sig, I know its off topic but I got one of these a few weeks ago and asked about it in the planted forum but got little response. I have read up on them but still have a few questions. How do you plant it? under the gravel or above? Does it need to be close to the surface? Mine is deep in the tank and from what I have seen the leaves should be on the water surface. Got any pics of yours?

Jon

Hi J....here is my take on it. The banana lily is usually short lived in regular aquariums. The tubers do NOT get buried in the gravel..just put them in enough to help hold them in place. They do root. I have 3, 2 in my ten gallon and one in my 46 gallon. The two in my 10 gallon have rooted and are doing well....that's because the size of the tank makes it closer to 2 watts/gallon. The one in my 46 is doing pretty well, but, has not rooted. This one is under very low light conditions. This plant could flower if the leaves go above the surface as I have read. I have two so-so pix.....the first is in my larger tank. The second is in the ten gallon and is blurry, but, if you squint, you can see how the roots come off the base of the plant above the tubers and grow down over them into the gravel. SH
