Eheim 2229 Problem

Could some one please tell me why my Eheim 2229 is pushing water out of the breather pipe when it starts to empty. Not a continues flow of water just a spurt, should water be coming out of this pipe at all?
I've check that the piping is on correctly and nothing is obstructing the inlet & outlet. I set the filter up last night and it was running fine, but this morning it had stopped, what might cause this?

When I first set up mine, I hooked the breather tube to the back of the tank and had problems with it. I think it got water in it from condensation and it drove me crazy with its constant gurgling. I fixed it by hanging it much higher above the tank. Works perfect now.
