Well my Eheim 2227 arrived today. I've set it up and its now running in the tank.

However I am now worried that it is too much filter for my tank. I have a Rio 180 ltr and the flow rate does seem extremely strong. I have aimed the spray bar towards the side of the tank which has reduced the overall flow but it still seems quite strong.

The tank is quite heavily planted so don't really want the flow to be too much.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I could do to impriove things. Loads of air is going into the tank so am now also worried about my CO2 content.

Also find the pulsing to be a bit strange, ie one minute quite calm and then the next it sprays out in all its fury. Fish don't seem too fussed at the moment but I don't want to stress them.

The reason they pulse is because the filter fills itself up and then empties every minute or so. For this reason the 2227 Wet/Dry filter will put loads of air through your tank water regardless of how you position the spray bar because of the filling/emptying action of the filter and the surface area of the filter media, so I'm not sure it would be the best filter for a planted tank!
As for the size, it is rated to filter tanks almost twice the size of the Rio 180 so it is plenty of filter for your tank, but I don't know of any way of reducing the flow on these filters.
On another note; IME the wet/dry filters are best at biological filtration, and not so good at mechanical, so I run another cannister filter alongside my wet/dry for mechanical filtration only.

Depending on the spraybar you could always bore the holes out slightly or add a few holes which should reduce the pressure, if you have some pipe the correct size you could make a longer spray bar and experiment with the amount and size of the holes to reduce the pressure.
