Hi,

I have just bought an Eheim Pro 2224 and the EHFISYNTH Filter Pads are too expensive to replace every week.
How would I go about using the bagged stuff (Candy Floss Type) in this filter. The problem being it is not like my other Eheim (ECCO) where you actualy encase it in the media basket, the 2224 basket is open at the top exposing it to the impellor. If I just put it in the top basket would it get sucked up and tangled in the impellor?

Sorry for sounding slightly thick  :dunno: , but I can`t see any way of putting the wool in without causing problems, unless it was lower down the basket. I assume it has to be at the top basket?

Any advise and experience welcomed.

personaly I don't use the EHFISYNTH Filter Pads. They are meant to 'polish' the water but I have found they make little differance. I just use the blue corse fliter pad and ceramic media on both my 2028's

don't think it *has* to be in the last basket. it may be slightly less effective in other baskets it'd probably still work to an extent.

we just fill the externals with more sponges/bio balls/ceramic media etc etc, and get a cheapo internal and put filter floss in that. :good:

Where did you read the synth filters must be changed weekly?

Would be lucky if mine gets checked in 6months and then it would only get washed out

sophos9,

Glad you mentioned the synth filter, I have been throwing the pads away and replacing every week/fortnight as I understood that they shouldn`t be cleaned, so I just had a quick search and came across this.

Thanks,

I thought it would be worthwhile posting some thoughts on the different filter media. It seems a lot of newcomers to the hobby get confused by the different types, and this isn't helped by the retailers and manufacturers, all trying to get you to by lots of new filter material every week.

Filter wool

Filter wool can be used in many ways. Some filters use a small amount as a pre-filter (this is the case with the Compact-H filters in the Juwel aquaria, for example). Others use filter wool to "polish" the water, placing it at the end of the canister filter, just before the pump, and so ensuring the water sent back to aquarium is spotlessly clean. Filter wool can also be used as a the mechanical or biological media in a canister filter. Loosely packed wool works well as a mechanical filter, while tightly packed wool has enough of a surface area to support a decent colony of bacteria.

While versatile, the downside to filter wool is it gets dirty very quickly and is difficult to clean. In the average community tank, wool will need cleaning within a month or two, and it can only be cleaned a few times before it completely falls apart. I find I need to replace the stuff completely every 6 months or so.

Hope this is useful!

This still doesn`t answer the original question though,
"How would I go about using the bagged stuff (Candy Floss Type) in this filter. I`m glad I posted because you have just saved me a fortune on filter pads. :thanks:

 No probs mate.... Squeeze it out in aquarium water until each squeeze produces clear water then replace

As for adding the wool, I guess just stuff it in, only concern would be to stop it going into the pump... Couple of elastic bands around the tray to hold it in?

to save yourself a bit of cash m8 just buy a big roll of filter wool from ebay , you can get 5 meters for about £6, that way you can cut your own pads , as they will be pads and not floss i dont think you will get any problems from it getting sucked up ..
