I have an Eheim filter lying around and I am considering using it on one of my tanks, however I got it second hand with no instructions and I really need some help with the following questions.

1. The seal around the head to the canister.
a) Is is squishy? the one I have found in the box of bits is solid and I cannot close it properly.
b)Is there a nack to it or should I get a new seal?

2. The pipework. I have pipework that fits but is the intake pipe the one on the head or the one at the bottom of the canister?

3. Media. I usually use sponge, media, filter wool (from bottom to top) I am presuming it would be the same for this filter, yes or no?

4. Inside are two trays with spikes on.
a) Is one tray for the bottom and one for the top?
b) Do the spikes sit on the bottom of the canister or stick up into the sponge?
c) Do I put the first tray in then put the media in and the second one on the top? again spikes up or down for the top one?

Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

First off just a few handy urls.

Looks like you need a new sealing ring for starters (buy 2 as its best to have one spare in case of mishaps)
I would also order some canister clips because if the filter is second hand these may be sprained a little, so I would replace these (cheap)
For pipework you need
Eheim Flexible Tubing 12mm (12/16mm) for outlet
Eheim Flexible Tubing 16mm (16/22mm) for intake at the bottom of the filter canister

Media. I usually use sponge, media, filter wool (from bottom to top) I am presuming it would be the same for this filter, yes or no?
No these filters work from the bottom up. Filter wool is the last medium to use at the top.
Eheim do a range of different filter material for these filters

4. Inside are two trays with spikes on.
a) Is one tray for the bottom and one for the top? Correct
b)Do the spikes sit on the bottom of the canister or stick up into the sponge? They face the bottom to allow space for the water to circulate. On the top grille the spikes face upward to allow space between the impeller and the filter media.
c) Do I put the first tray in then put the media in and the second one on the top? again spikes up or down for the top one? Correct, Grille spacings as previous answer

Any further questions
