Allright lads;

Excuse the bitterness I am about to unleash; it stems from at least half a year of repressed frustration and anger at the most irritating filter I've ever laid my eyes on.

I bought the 2213 for my Juwel Rio 180 (was told that this was a good filter for my tank). Bought one online; didn't come with taps or biomech - not a problem - just bought taps and mech in the LFS. Anyways I set the filter up - primed it and turned the thing on; rightly enough the outflow was kinda weak but I had heard that the 2213 was known for it, so I didn't mind.

What I DID mind is the noise - for a supposedly "silent" filter it is by far the loudest thing in my room; even louder than the internal Interpet filter I have running in my 50 litre (and thats directly beside my head when I sleep at night!). Every night all I hear is this rattling noise; I've tried everything (from buying/fitting a new impeller shaft to shaking the canister to expel air and even wrapping 3 thick towels around it and under it) - amazingly the noise persists! Last night I tried adding a 4th towel to muffle the noise; I finally managed to get asleep by 4am; woke back up at half 6 with that bloody rattling noise again. Needless to say my frustration is at boiling point ¬_¬

I should note that everytime I take the filter apart and correct the impeller shaft it seems to run silently for quite some time (that is until the next day when it starts rattling again).

Sorry for my very angry rant here; I'm just so fed up with this filter - for a company that's supposed to be very reliable this has been nothing but a disappointment. So does anyone have any idea how I can stop this thing rattling?

Have you got both little black bungs on the shaft?
If you have maybe they need changing or adjusting
One has to sit on the bottem of the imprella in a little dip
I have one of these and it rattled untill I changed bungs

Aye, have to say, mine is quieter than the little internal on the fluval ebi I have and I'm in the same room right now as both of them. Could easily sleep with both in the room. It does get some air locking when you first restart it after a filter clean but yours sounds like more than that.

Overall, I'd say there's definitely something wrong with yours.

The dangers of online buying ¬_¬

I just added new rubber bushels (although I dunno where you put the 2nd one; theres no space for it on the impeller shaft, as the top of that goes directly into the wee impeller lock thing.....) and it seems to have made it quiet.... for now. Will keep you both updated ;)

Of course. Its near half 1 here, and its decided to start rattling again. I will be sending complaints to both Eheim and Zooplus in the morning.

Question: since this waste of plastics not working, is it possible for me to transfer the filter cartridge media from my faulty 2213 to say a brand new 2215? Would they be compatible or not (and would I get a bacterial kill off)? Cuz Im not buying another 2213 again if I can help it; better to cut my losses and upgrade before I throw the thing against the wall.

Hit it, kick it, smash it to bits with a hammer.
The exact same filter I have is completely useless no flow worth talking about. Its put me off Eheim.

moving the media over wont be a problem, but the 2213 is th smallest, so the round pads wont obviously fit in the basket properly. get the new filter from charterhouse aquatics, make sure you get the + model which has all the media, hose, taps etc already in it. the biomedia formt eh 2213 should be enough on it own to move, i dont think moving the sponges would really be needed. i dont think i would bother, just move the hula hoops and rabbit droppings to the new filter, and keep an eye on the water stats for a few days. why not go for the 2217 ? the 2217 uses larger bore pipe so you will have to replace your pipe, i think, but im not sure, the 2215 will use the pipe you already have.

Hmmmm odd, I have a 2217 and it is completely silent.

Eheim are the daddies, hands down, it is either a faulty unit or user error.

I think the 2215 is the best option (if it uses the same pipes i wont need new taps or anything. The 2217 (while powerful) might be overkill for my slow moving fish!

How can the rattling be an error on my part? I've done everything I can to fix it. New impeller shafts several times. Refits and constantly moving the canister about to expel air pockets, to no avail.....

Eheim either lie when they boast of how quiet their filters are or its faulty. If you want I'll make a video to show you.

PS: as a test yesterday I placed the canister head in a bucket of tankwater and turned it on. Even then it still rattled #63###.......

Must be a faulty unit them if you have rechecked everything.

I have done some remarkable stupid **** with the TetraTec ex700 that runs on the same tank as the 2217, that's despite having run them for over 10 years.

My mates gonna give me a lift upto the fishstore that sells the Eheims locally (good 20 minute drive away ¬_¬). I'll give the 2215 a try, and ship all my biomech into the new one, and also squeeze all my filter pads (so that all the "good bacteria" goes into the new pads). Also add a few doses of filter aid over the next week or so.

I take it this is the way to go about it? To prevent bacterial kill-off I mean.

#93### - if that's the case then I just spent £80 on a 2215 for no bloody reason at all! =P

I'll see if it runs quieter - if it does I'll sell it on Gumtree or something; its probably best I use the more powerful filter (for future use; some of my fish get pretty big....)

Amazing. I've had EXACTLY the same problem with mine, bought just before Christmas. I've also tried the strategies you did, to no avail. Did you try pressing hard on the top of the canister? Did that make it quieter? It does with mine, as the plastic is quite flimsy I can feel it bow slightly under my hand, and it quietens down. I wonder if poor quality plastic means there's too much play around the impeller/shaft so it rattles.

I contacted Aquacadabra, who I bought it from, and they gave me the number of the Eheim rep to call. He was a rather rude man called Alan, who basically told me it was my fault, and to try re-priming it and try running it without media to see if that made a difference. I did. It didn't.

I went to my LFS (where I wish I had gone in the first place) and they said they've virtually stopped selling them as there have been a lot of problems. He said that Eheim now outsource production to China and their quality has dropped (used to be German made) significantly.

I have it for the tank in my living room, and it's almost unbearable when watching movies etc. I've ordered an AquaOne Aquis 750 which is marketed as 'silent' as a replacement, and when it arrives and I can swap out the media, I'll be returning the Eheim. I got the Aquis for £45 new, and I know because of selling laws that if it isn't silent I can return it too. Fingers crossed it's better.

PM me if you want the rep's number mate. HTH

I have a 2213 in the living room and apart from a slight humming noise mine is almost silent. when i first cleaned it and re primed it and switched it on it made a racket. It sounded like there was an airlock. all i did was release the 2 front clips and pressing down firmly, allowed the top to rise untill i heard the air escape and the water level rise ever so slightly this sorted that problem out... its worth giving it a go!
