I have 5 females in a 35 gallon tank. They are all heavy with eggs and I cant get a male until we move in a month or two. The two that seem the heaviest spend a lot of time on the bottom and just dont seem to be that happy.
Im figuring its because they are so big with eggs. Can they drop them or reabsorb them? Im getting a bit worried they might get ill.
Dont think theres much that i can do to help is there?

Ahh poor little girls. I have recently had lots of problems with girls big with eggs who can't or won't either drop or re-absorb them :/

I have tried putting a male near them but this can have a draw back as it actually makes their ovaries produce more eggs when seeing the male and if they don't drop them then they are actually worse off than if they didn't see a male  did that make sense?

I have noticed that CT females seem to get much bigger than ordinary females and can reach huge proportions and lead completely normal lives. It sounds though like yours aren't happy if they are on the bottom. I don't know the answer, I tried gently stroking my last one to try and help her get them out but only released a couple and I still lost her anyway :-(

Hope someone else can help you

Thanks Joby, and sorry you lost your female.

give it to some friends who have males and then ask for them back when there finished breeding or sometimes females will release eggs themselves and eat them so good luck in which choices you make

ok not sure if this is cruel but i no they do it on fish farms when breeding bigger fish maybe it could work for you

they pick the fish up turn it upside down and stroke wilst applying pressure this forces the eggs out

not meaning to sound cruel but maybe you could try that :/

Hand stripping is really dangerous on small fish so Im not going to try it.
Willtang I dont know anyone here with bettas.
Thanks for the ideas though.

Certainly worth a try Wilder, just need to find a chemist that sells it now. Thanks :)
