I have unexpectedly ended up with a tank containing a small group of trigonostigma espei and nothing else. In my community tanks the numbers of fry that survive are negligible because there are too many others looking for a free lunch. I'm completely OK with this as I have always said my hobby is keeping fish rather than breeding them.

While I am deciding on the future of the tank I thought I would try to encourage them to spawn so, based on the SF profile I have gradually upped the temp from 25 to 27 and started feeding them up. Over the last few days they appear to have become significantly more active, and a lot greedier when it comes to food time. Is this simply the result of the temperature increase, or are they taking the hint?

Most likely both. The temp rise suggest a season rise, and that should get everything going. Good luck.
