hi i have my tank and its inhabutants listed below. i wanted to make it an eel tank becaause the tigerbarbs are slowly getting killed. not a real shock i knew it wheh i go them. what are other fairly hardy eels that are freshwater. would placing a little salt in the tank hurt my fish? i heard the salt helps to keep the tank clean. is this true? well back to my question what other eels could i get for my tank? what other types of bichirs are there? are they compatible?

thanks everyone

Your tank is too small to keep more than one bichir, really you need around 20 gallons per fish with these territorial predators. Unless the eel always stays the same size as the bichir it will end up as food, eels grow real slow compared to the lightning growth of bichirs and again your tank will not be big enough for one of the larger species.

Ive never heard of salt keping a tank clean, in some cases it has some medicinal value but personally i never use it except for brackish tanks.

Some Eels live in Brakish water, however, I have never heard of it helping to clean the tank, as said it does have medical properties. But I would not use it in your tank as you have a Butterfly Plec, Plecs will not cope with salt in their tank. As for the species of Eels, I would say none. Eels grow slowly as with the Birchir who grow fast. Although the Birchirs are not aggressive they will not hesitate to snap up any food on offer in whatever form. IMO that tank is even to small for the fully grown Birchir. I woulld wait until you have another tank or you have moved the Birchir.

Could he fit a Half Stripped Spiny Eel. They grow to 12 inches. What are your tank dimensions?
