Hi getting a 30g having appistos in there - was wondering if there were any types of eels I like the fire track but know they get wayyyy to big for the tank just wondering if there is anything similar but smaller?

Peacock eels stay about 12 inches at the most.
I have a striped peacock eel and i absolutely love him :)
He is definately one of my favorites.

One peacock eel alone is pretty comfortable in a minimum of 20 gallons, so a thirty in my opinion would be great.
I was also told from a micro biologist that "the smaller species of spiny eels dont usually use much of the dissolved oxygen in the water because they stay near the bottom, which makes them seem almost non existent as far as the tank population goes." But I would have to say that they still account for the bio load.

++I honestly dont know if the oxygen thing is true or not, nor do i really believe or would recommend that someone believe that, but i figured i would just throw that one out there.

I've got a half banded eel - lovely and stays small enough for you. Think he was about £5 about 18 months ago.

I have got a peacock eel about 4" at the mo, heres a brill and kinda funny fish
and i also hav a half banded spiny eel about 3.5"at the mo, very mysterious and cool (hides in my sand alot!) i might sell to someone if they like :good: maybe you'd be interested :shifty:

get a striped peacock eel, they stay smaller than the normal peacock eel, and they are available at all times in petsmart, thats where i got mine, a 20 gallon tank is the very minimum for a single striped peacock eel, they do best in groups of 3, otherwise they will take months to adjust to their new tank, or worst they may never thats why owners dont see their eels eating for years.

Eels amongst all are my favorite fishes:)
I got a fire eel, 1 peacock eel, and a stripe peacock. Very amusing and fun to watch.
For your 30 gal tank peacock eel, striped peacock are the way to go; also zebra spiny eel, black spotted eel, half banded spiny eels i think are the ones that don't get to big. Be careful, some times Half Banded Eels are confused with Zig Zag at pet stores. Also came across Liberian Orange-spotted Eel you might want to check that one out. They are picky eaters though, and require allot of patience with that.

good luck:)

ive got a striped peacock and a starry night eel. Im very proud of my starry night because i cannot find any type of identification on him or any eels that look like him. hes in my avatar and was sold as a starry night eel for 20 bucks. if you happen to google that name, the only site that comes up with a pic ID is from the store itself that i bought it from.

eels can be picky eaters and you will be lucky if they end up eating shrimp pellets as a staple. my starry night wouldnt eat for me for the longest time until he gave into the pellets. my peacock will only eat scavanged bloodworms that fall into the gravel.

mine prefer to burry in gravel more than the sand, i have both in my tank. the sand gets too hard to burrow through. they are burried 90% of the time...the other 10 percent is food searching time.

good luck, these "eels" rock!
