does it need to be washed like other gravel? I hear it comes in liquid, like black water or something

so can I just put it in and fill up the tank?

Hi Ash, the eco-complete is ready to go you dont have to wash it just put it straight in and away ya go, i have nine bags in my setup you can see it in the journals section its called johns 450ltr regards john.

Thanks for the reply john, thats what I was hoping to hear :)

trying to wash out the was such a pain and still when I move anything around I get cloudy water :(

Will the 20lb bag be enough for my 29g? I believe it is a tall

I would get two bags as a minimum, three might be better. You don't want a shallow substrate, better to be deeper.

Instead of starting a new thread let me see if I can piggyback on this one as Rob might appreciate the answers also:

1) Is there a point where the substrate is too deep? I keep hearing deeper is better but I imagine filling my tank half-way with substrate would not be a good idea :)

2) Can you vacuum eco-complete? It looks so fine that I am afraid if I have it on the surface I will never be able to vaccum it.

1) That would cost a fortune  2>3" seems to be the depth that people go for.

2) When I do a water change, I swirl the tube just above the surface, this tends to lift the rubbish off the substrate surface.

answer to question 1: no, to a point, you cant have substrate too deep, unless it is too deep to be practical, you obviously want as much water as you can so you can keep a good number of fish, but you also want to have a good looking tank, anything between 2 and 3 inches is good, deeper is always better for planting though.

answer to question number 2: you can vacuum it but that would remove the nutrients from it as it turns fish poo and rotting matter into nutrients for the substrate i dont ever vacuum the eco complete in my tank, i just hover the vacuum over the plants to suck up big poos and dead plant leaves and mulm etc, you dont have to dig into the gravel to make it clean, you just disturb the very top layer to get the dirt to float, then suck it into the vacuum.
