Okay so I am medicating a small eclipse tank for ick and we all know we have to take out the carbon when doing so. My problem with doing this in an eclipse is that you remove the filter when you remove the carbon since they are together! I don't feel it is a good idea to remove the only means of mechanical filtration especially when the fish are sick.......am I right here?

Should I just cut the filter open to remove the carbon........put in another piece of mismatched media.........or leave it out?

Also, being that carbon is inactive after a short time, do you all have any advice about putting new in rather than buying a new filter all of the time? This could get expensive...................

thanks for your advice in advance.......... :D

Hi, I don't bother to take out my carbon when I use medication. And I do reuse my filters, it's cheaper than buying new ones and better for the fish cuz you're not taking away the good bacteria on the blue part. I cut away on half of the blue fuzz stuff along the side and empty out the old, then evenly put in new carbon. I sow the sides backup and use it over again. It works for me.

I have never had to medicate... knock on wood.. but doesnt that kill all the good bacteria too?
Ya I would at least stuff something in the water flow... or even better a sponge or something on the intake. That is the easiest place to get large particals out.

I cut the bottom of the filter pad out to get rid of the carbon. That way the sponge stays in the filter but the carbon doesn't.

good. I think they should make them where you can take out the carbon so you can still have your biological filtration and mechanical. I will do as you say and take out the carbon that way.

Thanks everyone for your help! :D :D

Muchas gracias~!
