Now that the weather is heading towards the lower digits I've noticed more change in my overall temp of my tank from evening when the light turns off to morning when it comes on. The light is on an automatic Timer set to 11am to 10pm. At night when the light goes out the temp is approx. 78ish and in the morning when I wake up and look the temp is almost below 70ish. I don't really like the idea of my tank going up and down like that but finding a heater that fits it sort of hard. I know most fish stores suggest against a heater in a 5 gallon tank but I'm thinking it's best if I get one.

The Azoo Titanium heater seems to be a decent choice and it nicely priced. By the looks it will fit to the right of the filter between the plastic frame at top and the side of the aquarium. (In the little triangular hole). I could easilly route the cable along the back to where my light and pump cords come out.

Azoo Heater

Does this seem like a good idea?

If anyone has any other ideas I'd be more than willing to look into it all.

Thanks in advance!

(I'm new to the board so be nice B) )

A simple 25W heater would work fine... I have a 6gallon eclipse and use one of these. http://aquariumguys.com/visitherm1.html

As long as it has a temp control knob, then the heater should maintain the tank to that temperature. That is if the heater isn't malfunctioning.

Oh, and welcome to the forums!

How do you have the heater mounted? in the back at an angle or straight up and down?

I was looking at the Rena Excell 50watt because it looks like one of the best reviewed but It'll be too long to manage it well.

I have it straight up and down. But I could have it an angle or across the back however; it's short enough for my tank. I don't know what the dimensions difference is from the Eclipse 6 to the 5 though.

I just went and picked up a small 50watt heater.. it's a little thicker than some I looked at in the shop but it's a little better constucted. The cable is routed without cutting anything and it isn't ugly as hell so thats a plus.

I wanted to draw up this diagram to ensure I'm getting a equal heating pattern in my tank.

The heater is hidden by a few plants but it should have enough space around it.

I think I'll have even heating this way because...

~Water is pushed in a clockwise motion at the top directly in line with where the heater sits...

~Heat rises and will follow the clockwise current in the tank... water is also pulled upward from the bottom back side of the tank..

~The filter also pulls up cold water from bottom left and mixes it with warm water on right.

So yeah... does this look right? I assume that it providing even heating but I wanted some expert advice.

I think you've put too much thought into this personnaly :p

A 25 or 50 watt will have no trouble heating up that aquarium
I have a 50W in my 5 gallon and temp is pretty even across the tank. It won't make much difference how you put the heater just as long as the water is not stagnant. Since you hve a filter that creates current, it'll be fine whichever way you put it!

I'd rather over analize this than under... I love my fish.. I just want them happy.
