I've done a google search and most people seem to like them but there where also people who hated them and had had many problems with them...what do you people think of the Ebo-Jager heaters? I want to buy one tommorow, but wanted to check here first, because they are pretty pricey. Also, how many watts would I need for an 18 gallon?

I have them in 9 of my tanks, never had a problem with them. The dial on top may not correspond with the scale that is on it, some are off by a degree or 2. Sometimes 79F may be anywhere from 77 to 81F, but any heater should be checked with a thermometer, especially at first. Besides that, they are accurate, and keep temp well. If you turn them up or down however many degrees on the scale, they change the temp by that amount.

I love Ebo Jagers. They keep the temp very consistant. Also, I'm not sure if all these heaters can be calibrated, but mine has a blue button on top that you can pop up and then set it to the proper temp that your thermometer reads. I highly recommend Ebo Jager.

Common opinion on the Ebo-jagers is that they were awesome before the brand was purchased by Eheim. Since then, they have suffered a significant decline in quality.

Just out of curiosity, when did Eheim take over?
It was sometime in '03-'04... Not sure exactly. I guess they redesigned them (with a blue top or somesuch?) around that time. All of the complaints (and there are a LOT of them) I've read about have been with the new units. The old "green" units are apparently still rock solid.

These days, the Visi-Therm Stealth seems to have taken over as the workhorse heater of choice.

Personally (since I use a canister) I have a Hydor External heater. It's more expensive, but deadly accurate (no fluctuations, even within .1 degree). Having it on the filter return line means it's one less piece of hardware cluttering up the tank.

I read the complaints about the new Ebo Jager heaters as well and decided to buy a Rena Cal Top Light instead. Saved a few bucks, and it works great.

Well my Ebo had been going strong for over a year now with no problems. Hopefully it will keep going.

Shoot...I've already bought one. Oh well, its working great so far, and my bettas are sure happy to have the warmer water.
