i started my fish collection with 2 comet goldfish, in a bowl. three and a half years later i have the same fish, but in a 10 gallon aquarium along with a few other fish. about 6 months ago i bought a sunset platy, not knowing it was a tropical water fish (my tank is at room temp). noticing his lethargic condition, and upon my discovery that he was a tropical, not cold water fish, i decided to give him to a friend with a heated tank. so i did this, and he seemed to take well to her tank. however, yesterday one of her other fish took a fair sized bite out of my platy's tail.. so i took him back and am "nursing" him in a seperate tank from my other fish (so he wont be attacked due to his condition). i was just wondering, what are the chances of him making a good recovery? i am aware that his tail wont grow back.. but he seems to be able to swim okay i suppose, he seems a little off balance and it seems that he doesnt want to move much. i am assuming that he is still recovering, and like i said i was hoping to find out, even though his tail cant grow back, will he be able to function properly? or should i put him out of his misery? please help. :( :(

High and welcome carly :)

Is this seperate tank your nursing him in heated and filtered? Tropical fish tend to be alot more demanding on water quality.

If the bite didn't go down to the body of the fish but only removed some of the fin then the fish should be able to regenerate this. But to do this the fish requires excellent water conditions. keep an eye out for any secondry infection. A product called Melafix I have had great success with

thank you so much! i didnt think he could regrow the part of his tail, and last night i was even looking at humane methods of euthanasia for him.. thank god i got here first. he does seem to be moving more this morning. the tank he is in is heated and filtered, and ive noticed that hes spending pretty much all of his time at the top of the tank, he probably needs better use of his tail to submerge deeper?
anyway, i should introduce myself. my name is carly, and im a 17 year old high school student from alberta, canada. i love my fish, as you can probably tell. i probably get way more attached to them than i really should, but i cant help it. i dont know what i will do when my hardy old 3 and a half year old goldfish go, i tell you. but anyway, hope to hear from more of you, thanks again for the info!
