We have a 2 foot tank which has been ran for about 12 months (goldfish etc) with no problems. We recently added a heater (25 deg), a silver shark, angel fish, a few sucking catfish, some neon's and a guppy.

The guppy and two catfish died within a week of putting them in the tank. We had the water tested and the PH and Ammonia are OK (PH was slightly above neutral but no concern). The hardness is 250. They tell us that it is due to some coral grit in the rocks, but there is such a small amount of it that it cant possibly make that much of a difference.

We have about 3 parts plastic to one part real plants, some ornaments, an air curtian and an under water filter.

Can anyone give us any advice on either how to reduce the hardness of the water, or what we can do differently?

Cheers!
