I was at Petco today looking at Dwarf Puffers, i was talking to some lady about them that works there. She kept telling me that they are 100% brakish and would die almost immediately in fresh water. After 20 minutes of arguing with her she said she would be right back, she was going to go ask someone. They also told me that they are brakish and would die in fresh water. I was very mad at them becasue they were adding marine salt to the tank with them righ twhile we were talking because first you aren't suppose to do that, and also they dont need salt. Petco should hire people that know what they are talking about!

SOME lfs don't have a clue I am afraid. When looking for DP's near me I drew a blank and thought that I would ask one to order me some. I got the correct scientific name (Carinotetraodon travancorius) and off I went. The first two consulted a book and said that red eye's were dwarfs and that the species I was looking for grew to 15cm+ and red eyes stayed below 5cm. Good job we have TFF!!

As for the ones you saw, are you absolutely positive they were DP's? I am not trying to patronise you, just that its possible they were brackish fish that looked like DP's.

[Edit: and No, you should not add undissolved salt to a tank with fish in it]

the next time you see someone add undissolved salt directly to a tank--any tank--pitch a major fit right there and immediately find the manager to complain! irregardless of variety, salt crystals will burn and damage fish upon contact. therefore that cannot be part of store maintenance policy and will directly ruin merchandise. a clerk can easily be fired for shortcutting maintenance (getting them fired for being uninformed is a lot more difficult ;) )

Yes, I am absolutely sure they were DP's, I am going back to Petco right now to have a battle, even the scientific name is Carinotetraodon travancorius says so right on the card. People there are so stupid like one time I saw them putting the Oscars with some smaller Rosybarb's and neons I mean how stupid.

don't even try to talk to ppl at petco or petland or any other frenchise pet stores, those ppl have no clue about fish, i seen them put healthy fish with ones with ick and other desises, i seen them mix salt right out the box into water with fish, i seen them leave dead fish in aquarium and other fish eating it, those are the ppl who will tell you to get a canister filter for 20 gal aquarium while some of them use those submesible bubbling filters as only filtration and expect to sell the fish before they die.

I had private fish owners keep brakish water in what is suppose to be salt water tanks, and i seen almost every low grade fish store mis name the fish, puffers especially, figure 8 puffer is not green puffer, and indian dwarf puffer is not a dragon puffer or black puffer, dragon puffer is not called red puffer and so on, most pet stores will try to sell you stuff like tgi firday's waiters try to stick you up with more expensive dishes and waterdowned drinks :p
