I am extremely excited as my first tank is about to be complete with the addition of dwarf puffers. I am collecting 4 for a 15gallon tank this weekend! I wish to set up a continuing supply of snails for them to eat along with bloodworm.

For a snail tank I was thinking of getting a small tank (dont know about 3-5gallon). I understnad that they produce by themselves. What exactly is needed for them and a good cheap setup? Thinking need a filter? or can i get away with frequent water changes?

Was going to feed them on algae wafers and veggies (that are organic free from chemicals) softened up a little. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.s. was also thinking of ramshorn snails over others, though let me know if better species!

A filtered tank will make life a lot easier. I breed snails in a filtered tank and also in plain 2L and 6L containers on window sill. On unfiltered snail hatcheries, expect to do at least 2 or 3 large water changes per week.

I find the best snails for DPs are pond snails, pouch/tadpole/bladder snails and ramshorn snails. These breed fast and the shells not too hard for the DPs t crunch. Some of my picky DPs actually prefer pouch snails. All the snails need are clean water, plenty of plants (or plant clippings) and plenty of food. No heater required. The snails will eat fish food, algae, frozen bloodworms, boiled veggies, etc... anything you feed your fish really.

Brill - that sounds so simple! I will be looking for their small tank this weekend along with getting the puffs, I may start out with the big water changes and get a filter later (orrrrrr actually..knowing me i probably will get a cheap sponge one). Thank you for the upload on snail set up and species - really appreciated :)

I have won my ramshorn snails and they are on their way next week, off tomorrow to get a small filtered tank! Yipee x
