Hi there,

I was recently informed that a dwarf puffer is not alloud to be accomodated in a tank that is being treated with White spot medication?
 i was very interested why this was and if it was infact true? are they simular to morymids in respect that regular medication will harm them? and maybe even lead to death?
and what is useable with these guys?

Any information is welcome.

Thank you!

Whenever I've had any troubles with whitespot in my puffers, I've always treated with salt and increase in temperature. If you have a tank with whitespot medication in though, you really shouldn't be adding any fish, nor should DP's be mixed with other fish (unless the types listed in the thread at the top of the forum).

My neighbour was told to use a special formular with hers and i was just wondering why?
are they allergic to whitespot treatment?

and i do not apprieciate being pounced upon about adding dwarf puffers to a tank with white spot treatment as i was just asking about them from interest....i never stated what my situation was apart from gathering knowledge

The short answer is that some aquarists have (apparently) had bad experiences using copper-based medications on tanks containing pufferfish.

Personally, I've never had any problems using a regular whitespot remedy (eSHa EXIT) with my pufferfish, specifically South American puffers and red-tail puffers. But if others have had problems, it's perhaps wise to take that on board and treat your fish accordingly.

Ask your retailer for a copper-free brand that is safe to use in tanks with invertebrates as this should be safe to use with any type of fish.

I think Fella's point above is that you shouldn't *need* to put dwarf puffers in a tank being treated for whitespot because putting dwarf puffers in most community tanks doesn't tend to work very well. Far better to keep the puffers in their own aquarium where you can treat with puffer-friendly methods as and when required. Dwarf puffers can be kept in 25% seawater for weeks without harm, which will eventually kill off whitespot when coupled with high temperatures, and dipping them in seawater will further blitz any external parasites.

Cheers, Neale

Thanks for that! i just got curious to as in why! :shifty:

I understand and fully take on bored what fella was saying.

I feel that sometimes though people on this forum can be a little negative and for beginners it may discourage them for asking for help maybe?

But thank you anyways! you have widened my knowledge with a positive attitude so thank-you! :good:

I thought I was quite tame!

You must have misinterpreted what i said because by no means did I mean to sounds condescending or anything along those lines. I was using statements as questions and essentially trying to ask for more information, eg

- Are you adding the DP's to a tank with whitespot in?
- Do you already have DPs with whitespot?
- Are you adding DP's to a tank with other tankmates in?

But I didn't have time (or probably the patience) to type those all out when i typed that post, hence the shortness. I didn't mean to be abrupt, sorry.

I do always try and help beginners where I have the knowledge and you'll notice that in the pinned topic at the top of the oddball forum, I always try to offer any knowledge I can impart that might useful to those new to the hobby.

Lucky enough i am not a new commer to the hobby, or this forum ! It was perhaps my own fault for not stating all facts!

I was just gathering knowledge as my neighbour was sold x2 dwarf puffers and she was told not to use the interpet medications that contained the copper solutions.

And i was intrigued as to why this was.

I was not having a dig i just have found from some comments posted on these forums, where people come down on those whoem obviously need help.
I have noticed that presentation of positive comments is not being given.
I am trying to get this point around the forums so i ask of your support if you see any of this going on!

Imagine if you were a beginner and you did not cycle your tank and you added for example 10 pangasius cats to a 60 litre fish tank....as you thought they were cute!

I have seen many harmful comments that will truely put a beginer off rather than positively correcting them!

I apologise to you as you were not rude you just made assumptions.

Im sorry and please support my positive help campaign as we should support and guide begginers not discourage them! :good:
