I'm considering a dwarf puffer fish for my new 4 gallon tank, but I don't JUST want a dwarf puffer fish in there. So I was wondering if anyone knew if they could be kept with ghost shrimp? I know they eat snails which is why I'm unsure about the shrimp. Thanks!

Never kept DPs myself, but from what I've read it's hit and miss with shrimp. Some DPs will tear shrimp to pieces, some will get along reasonably well. Blackberry, Amano & Red Cherry are species I've heard people keeping them with. You could try it, might not be the best idea though.

Just realized I posted this in the wrong section.
I'm planning on having an extremely well planted tank, so maybe the shrimp could hide? But at the same time I'd feel awful if one was killed. Hmmm. Decisions...

In a 4 gallon, which id reccomend getting a 10 gallon...as the dp will get bored in a 4 gallon even if planted heavily..... still the only tank mates i can think of are shrimps in such small tanks even so mine always ate any shrimp i put in the tank...even ones 2x the size of him..

Ugh I hope the DP is happy in a 4 gallon. THe dwarf puffer specialized website I relied on said that was perfect for 1; as did this forum.
Well if I find he's bored I've got an old spare 10 I can set him up in. I've also got an unlimited supply of snails to keep him busy with hunting.
The first obstacle is just finding a dwarf puffer however.

I've never seen them myself. Some people claim to get them from walmart pretty commonly, but I've never even been to a walmart that has fish, or even fish tank supplies.

If the 10 gallon is water tight then i would go for this option without a doubt. Gives you much more scope for things. You could include another Dwarf Puffer and maybe add a couple of Otocinclus. Ensure there are lots of tunnels, nooks and crannies for them to explore. Also ensure plenty of plants of various sizes to create more interest for them.

:) I know a bigger tank isn't always an option, but it is a better option without doubt. If you feel that your tank would be big enough then have a go... At least you have a 10g to fall back on should it be too small.
