ive been intrested in puffers since i first got into fish....however didnt have the tank space but now i do, so whats the min and also the best kind of tank for dwarf puffers?? and are they better on there own or with others?? thanks!

Hey hon, these were my first fish and great little guys. Most on here would say 5g per puff (I had 4 in a 14g and they worked perfectly).

They can have sand or gravel substrate. Any silk, plastic or live plants, need lots of them though as these are intelligent creatures and inquisitive, also essential if have more than one as they have agressive tendancies and need line of sight broken up.

One on its own is fine, if going for groups it is recommended 2-3 females to one male to spread out the aggressiveness. You can tell the males by blue iridescent eye wrinkles and generally dark line down the belly (though have been informed by others this is the sign of who is dominant in the tank). When they are juveniles can be hard to tell. When I got 4, two were females and two males, so had to separate one of the males out.

Best diet is bloodworm and meatier foods, giving them a rest day at least once a week. Also do not over feed as they do not stop ever at feeding. They also love snails, so if you set up small pest snail container just for them they will love you forever.

Hope that has helped!

helps alot! im intent on using my triops tank, its a 25litre, what is that in gallons?? its got as a decent heater in there and i already have a tank to move my triops to so this is not a problem, also have lots of plants to place there to!, its just i went to pets at home yesterday and couldnt help but notice this 1 puffer stare at me as walked past....had to stop there was a good 8 - 10 in the little tank but this little guy was just there staring with it beady eyes :) put my finger up to the tank and he followed it! this has caused me to want him really badly lol, so i thought i would do my research first! oh and for the record the filter that will go into the tank is in anouther tank right now fully cycled for a good 6 months now this is ok yes? thanks for your help so far!

running to the calculator, 25 litres is...5.5 UK gallons and 6.6US gallons, perfect for a singular puffer fish!!! The filter sounds good, what is the turnover like? These guys are super messy and you will need to keep up on those water weekly changes, the larger the filter the better though again I had the right size for my tank size and it worked great with them. Also unlike bettas they like playing in the current.

Start moving stuff around, plant it up and you sound ready to go :good: When I picked my original four there was a huge tank with 40 of them, they do really develop different personalities and think you won't regret it, especially if you pick the cute guy that interacted with you!

sweet! well im used to doing stupid amounts of water changes so that is not a problem to me lol, so before hand ive got to split my 110 litre so i can move the guppy fry over there, then there is the 32litre tank which will house the triops, then i have the 25litre spare :) exspect a thread in the next few days on it lol, thanks for you help

No worries at all! You are going to enjoy the little delight! If you ever have queries about them please feel free to PM me, though the resident experts on these are Jennybugs and iSnail who are both really helpful and know all! Oh = will keep a close eye out, as really enjoyed the Triops thread :good:

oh i cannot wait :) i hope he/she has not been sold as i really like this little guy, in the process of setting up the tank...wow ive never had such a hard job lol, im abit stuck on which plants i want in there and filter wise, you said about them need good filteration, well i have a few filters i can use, they are...

pf minny
pf1 (im not fond of this its abit noisy)
fluval plus 2

so of course im tempted to use the fluval 2 but im abit worried about the flow as its aonly a 25 litre tank....any suggestions would be great!

Well to give you an idea I used a fluval 2 plus for four on the 14g tank and it coped extremely well, allowing me only to do one water change a week. Perhaps try the mini? if you can test the water params that may be the way to go as the fluval may take up too much room, bet your having fun landscaping

ok, sounds like the pf mini is the bis then :look: so im now thinking about the plants....whoa bit problem lol!!

As it is a lone puff in there you wont need to worry about line of sights too much. Do put things in for him/her to have a nosy at, any plants, objects, bridges etc :good:
