Hi

I've added 2 Dwarfe Gouramis to my tank today. I had in there 6 Neon Tetra's and 2 Red Tail Guppies. Now all seems ok and the girl in the shop said they'd be ok and indeed the book says they are communal. However speaking to a friend tonight who said that he had some in the past and they ate his Tetra's. So should I be worried ? I've had the Tetra's and Guppies since 1st October and all are well so it will be upsetting to loose them to a new fish.

Anyone know whether the Tetra's etc wil be at risk with the addition of the Gourami ?

Thanks

I have 2 dwarf gourami's in a tank with cardinals and other fish (see sig). I've had a couple of fish get injured in fights, but not sure who is to blame.

You should be all right if there is plenty of space for the gourami's to set up individual territories, and plenty of high growing/floating plants to keep them happy.

They are far more docile than many of the other gouramis.

You should be fine.

Dwarf Gouramis should be good for your tank. They are peaceful fish unlike the other gouramis such as the gold gourami, which is very aggressive!

Thanks for the responses.

A little concerned though in that one of the Gouramis appears to be fine and swimming around eating vegetation whilst the other is pretty lifeless. I found it laying on the bottom and then goes to the top and stays at the surface. None appear to have eaten any of the food I gave the fish this morning. Do they require special diets ?

I have put in a slice of Cucumber as they were eating this in the shop. Is tihs ok ?

The Ph is around 8 so maybe this is too high but the fish were brought from a shop in the area so I guess the water should be similar.

Sorry for all the questions !

Dwarf gourami can be pretty touchy, and you can loose them with no warning at all, in my experience they are more touchy than blue rams. I'd be more worried about their health than them eating tetras which is VERY unlikely

Thanks again for the responses.

Well I have seen other articles about the fish and it seems to concour that they are not aggressive. So quite rightly the health of the fish is my worry at the moment especially just hearing that it's been sat near the surface all afternoon.

I've spoken to the shop and they'll replace it Wednesday if it dosn't improve. Still like to know what the problem is in case it affects the other fish in the tank.

Thanks again

Hi

Have been reviewing the status of my Dwarf Gourami. Tonight have noticed that behind the right Pectoral fin there is a large patch of, what looks like, White fungus. Also notice that the Pectoral fin is pused back so I think it's also damaged.

I've taken a piccie with my phone camera so alothough the quality isn't very good you can see the Whie Fungus.

Though dwarf gouramies are not aggressive towards other fish, they can be towards each other so need 10 gallons per fish. Just keep this in mind as you realy don't want stressed dwarf gouramies. As you've already discovered, they are rather fragile and prone to disease. Usualy, stress is the trigger. In your case, moving into a new environment was stressful enough to cause this. To be honest, I can't tell what's wrong from the picture. It's just too blurred (and too small though I zoomed in so I could see a little better). There does appear to be some discoloration just below the dorsal, behind the operculum. However, I can't tell whether this is what you were talking about or whether this is fungus, missing scales or a bacterial infection. I would suspect, from your description, that it's bacterial and you should by an anti-bacterial med or one that says it kills mouth fungus/culumnaris.
Here's a link with some pictures: http://www.fishpalace.org/Disease.html
Scroll down to where it says external bacterial infections, mentions columnaris and mouth fungus. Does it look something like that?

With my 2 dwarf gourami's one was very aggressive towards the other so I had to give one away to a friend :(
