I set up a tropical 20 gallon tank 6 weeks ago and cycled it with a yabby, after which i added a dwarf gourami, baby red tailed shark, and two guppys. The yabby does not threaten the fish at all. Ammonia nitrite and nitrate are negligible and have been since the end of the cycle. Recently my gourami has red sores, one on his lower jaw which went away, then one which grew on his forehead to quite a size, and a smaller one on his side. What are these sores and how should I treat them?? in addition, the colour of the shark is highly variable, and he is very timid and hides most of the time. All fish are visibly eating, except the red tail shark who can be seen picking from the bottom but never comes out at feeding time. The tank is quite well planted, with lots of hornwort and a val plant in the corner. Is the shark's behaviour normal, and what should I do about the gourami?? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hey, it sounds like your gourami has skin ulcers, with which I would treat with an internal bacterial infection treatment e.g Interpet No. 9 Anti-internal Parasite.

Hope this helped.

John

What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

I would take the red tailed shark back as they are really agggressive and need tanks of 40 gallons.

The sores does it have any white edging to it.
Does the sore look like its ulcerating into a hole.

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate all undetectable via API testkit. ph is 7.5. Sore has white edges and is ulcerating...im assuming this is some sort of bacterial skin infection the tropic_john was talking about...i gather they are quite common in gouramis. What is the outlook??

As for the shark, I am well aware of their tankreuirements, and when he starts giving trouble he will be moved. More importantly though, at the present his lethargy is no better and he hasnow developed little pin holes in his fins...any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

it sounds like an ulcer.
Bacterial med.
