I am looking for a dwarf cichlid that would be compatible in a community tank. I currently have a 29g planted, with plenty of faux roots and branches, a small plastic cave/rock, a couple small "real" rock, sand bottom. current inhabitants are 12 or so (very soon many more) guppys (3 or 4 adult, rest several weeks old), 3 adult and 1 baby florida flagfish, a red-tail shark, and a cory cat. I'd like teh cichlid for fry control. I had an angel upto a few weeks ago but it was finally getting too big for tank (had it since small baby, for near 2years). the cichlid would need to be small (3" or under), aggressive to the fry but not to the adults. and able to hold his own against the red-tail shark, who bothers EVERY new inhabitant incessantly for first couple weeks (he DESTROYED 2 of 3 dwarf tetras in under 30minutes). after the "initiation" the red-tail luckily only does the occasional feint chasing of the others.

(and yes, i know the red-tail is also at the limit of size for my tank. but he is so cool, and was an impulse purchase. but please please dont comment on that... only if he affects compatibility with the cichlid...please)

german ram possibly? ruby clowns are nice also called a bolivian ram , don't know about the compatibility with you other fish or your plants even though they are small still a cichlid.gl

german blue rams are not community fish....they need temps that the majority of other fish cannot handle...they should be kept in a temperature range of 28-32oC fail to meet this and their immune systems will be surpressed as will their digestive system.

all apistos make good comunity fish as do mikrogeophagus altispinosus

I agree bolovians and Apistogramma are more suited for a communtiy tank. I wouldn't reccomend any Africans for your community tank if that is what you are looking for. The rams and Apistogramma are new world cichlids.

Maybe one lone krib? You maybe wouldn't be able to get one on it's own from a pet shop but you may well be able to get one from here. I have a male kribensis in my tank and he is very peaceful since he has no female to breed with so no proper territory to defend. Females are more colourful though so you could have one of them instead if you wanted :)
