Hi

I have just set up my juwel compact filter, i didnt put in the carbon or nitrate sponges and replaced them with a coarse blue,

I was wondering how often the white filter pads for removing small particles should be changed? And where i can buy them for cheap!

Thanks

I replace my sponges when thet cannot be rinsed anymore. Depends really on your tank & how dirty it gets - but i would change the top white pad & carbon app every 2/3 months.
Most lfs sell them cheap, i get mine from maidenhead aquatics. I would imagine they are pennies on ebay

Hi, I make my own white filter pads by buying a large pack from the pond department for £2.99. You can cut it up with sissors then divide it to the thickness you require. Basically, my method is to clean or replace the white media every water change. If you are using carbon (which is generally only used for removing old medication these days) they should be removed and chucked after a few days as they become full then start 'leeching' back. The rest of the media in the filter....ie coarse sponge, ceramic tubes bio-ball etc should be left as long as possible. When it look very dirty then a very gentle rinse in old tank water or dechlorinated water (NEVER under the tap!) Also only do a portion (no more than half) at any one time.

I know it's wierd but a sparkling clean filter is no good to man or beast
