I am planning on doing a freshwater stingray tank this summer and while I have found all sorts of information on caring for them, I have come across conflicting information on what type of tankmates could be used. Some of these are going to seem obvious but I just want to make sure and get an idea.

group A
Discus
Angel Fish

group B
Rams
Clown Loaches
Neon Rainbows

group C
Cardinal tetras

My gut says group 1 only.

any other ideas?

IMO rays are better off in a species specific tank.
Or have very carefully chosen tankmates.

A lot of combos i've seen are arowanas, dats, TSN, tigrinis cats and the like.

I would go for something that uses the upper part of your tanks, like arowana. Things like clown loaches...... :dunno:

I would be very careful with a TSN as a tank mate as there are stories of them eating 'Rays tail first and folding the wings up. That and the fact these things often hit the 4 foot mark.

Other than that, tank mates that generally stick to the top of the tank should be fine (a la Aros). One thing to remember is that plecos are risky as they are known to suck on the side of the ray leading to infections.

Groups B and C are lunch to rays, group A would work.

As said the best tankmates for rays are ones that are large and peacefull, medium sized Pimeloid catfishes, silver and black arowana's, eartheater type Cichlids and larger peacefull Characins like silver dollars are all good popular choices.

I've just come back from my lfs
they have a ray in a tank with silver, black and normal khullies:O
I asked the guy if they were suitable tank mates and he said yes
then I asked how big the ray will get and he said about the size of an EP (10")
Even I know that is wrong, I'm thinking dustbin lid size.

shame I can't have him as it's only £50
