i was just wondering wether it would be possible to have an amphibious top layer and a aquatic bottom layer, please escuse the drawing, im no expert. (in a 55gal)

Your drawing looks like you want to put a horizontal glass, (or similar), shelf across one end of your tank at a certain depth with the tank filled to roughly the level of the shelf.

Sure, if that is what you want. Well cut piece of glass, tube of aquarium grade silicon sealant, few stand off pillars while it sets.

Without more detail it is difficult to comment. I can see cleaning issues with the covered portion. The substrate on the raised portion will need containing as it will tend to fall over the edge.

I guess the question is what are you planning here?

im wondering what species would be compatible, what will eat what?

Well, I'm right up in the air here!

You have not mentioned any sizes. Almost anything could be housed in such a setup if it was big enough.

You must have a reason for wanting to do something like this. What are you trying to acheive?

i was thinking of putting newts, salamanders ect, with cichlids in my 4ft 55gal tank. using the same sand in the top layer.
i'm just worried about things eating each other, i don't know what species are compatible.

times like these when a little research is needed. asking questions with some back ground information is always better. im sure there are hundreds of combinations that people could come up with.
narrow it down for them a little to get your questions answerd

How can i narrow it down anymore, can newts go with cichlids?

I'm wanting to move this thread, the DIY issue is sorted. I don't quite know where though. I imagine some cichlids will rip a newt to shreds, others will be eaten by a newt.

You may be better starting a new thread on the relevent cichlid board and/or the Amphibians/Reptiles board.

Almost certainly it can be done.

Crabs and some fish would probably work,i've seen it at a shop.
