i have this one boy who HATES the life out of his Betta Tank. he reacted the same way to an Aquaview+, and to a 10g community! the only time he's happy, it seems, is during water changes, when he's put into his own little Betta Hex.

i was wondering, would it be cruel to move this Betta into a Duel Betta Hex beside a female Betta? of course, i will add more plants to the divider to give them some privacy, and if either shows stress i'll always have bigger tanks on hand (as of now, a free fish bowl & Aquaterium stand by, as well as in-use Aquaview+, two Betta Tanks, and the community)

just a thought, because i know each Betta is individual and even though some people say it's cruel to keep them in containers less than a gallon, some Bettas do like it!

(if you were wondering, the reason he won't permanently move into the single Hex is because i find it's way to hard to see the entire fish in them!)

If he's happy in smaller quarters, let him have it. Small price to pay for the happiness of your fish.

My 4 new guys are kept in quart critter keepers. They like it much more than the cups they were in. And all are bubblenesting. What a mess!

You could always do what I've done with mine two. Each of them has a double betta hex to themselves. I just stack the tanks on top of each other so they can't see each other. I have a male and female and female is alot meaner. She's always the first to spot the male and start flaring at him. By stacking them on top of each other, they live in peace

Allowing each to have their own double hex gives each of them a good amount of room to move about in and I can see them very well too! And since double hexs are only like five dollars each, I'm considering picking up a third betta.

i had two males in one temporarily, but it just didn't seem like enought space (they were both larger ones), but i guess that will depend on his size. there wasn't much room for little plants with the divider in there though. i have a similar setup to laughncat, my red betta just wasn't happy in his 2 gal, wasnt happy in the 1 gal, so i moved him into the dual hex without the divider and he's so happy now. theres room for two small plants and he still has room to move and flare at the blue guy in the next tank. :D he's one that just prefers a smaller space. the duals are not that expensive, consider a second one like laughncat has and put the two sideby side or something.

Laughncat, did you remove the divider in the hexes? If so, how?

Should I move one of my bettas to a five gallon community tank? He always lies down at the bottom or stays at the top w/o moving. It seems as though he's unhappy.

If I could move him, it'd also be less stressful on the other male that's right next to it.

If it's the 5 gallon in your sig, it's already too full with fish. :/ Plus I've heard that some people have had problems keeping them with danios (the danios would nip the bettas tail). What you might consider doing (if you have the money to spare) is buying a Kritter Keeper (those plastic rectangle homes with the bright colored lids). They are perfect for bettas...they have the right amount of room (about a gallon) and they have a lid, so the betta can't jump and the air stays humid. :D

I have to change the sig again...
Anywho, I moved 6 fry and the danios to the 50, and in a week or two I'll move the rest of the fry.

Can I have it in with 3 platies and an algae eater?

Three platties need about ten gallons. Plus you have an algae eater. God help you if it's a pleco. It wouldn't be a good idea...

I just moved my bettas from their gallon vases into two different communities! Big blue got put in with the rams and other gourami and he is getting picked on. I think he will hold his own.

I moved my crowntail with my danios and tetras. He is doing really well! The danios keep their distance form him. They don't nip fins....

Sorry about the late reply here...I generally only visit the site indepth while I'm out work :p Yes, it gets that slow some nights

Anyway, I never installed the divider in the double hex to begin with. If you've never bought one, basically comes int he box with out the divider installed and included a bag of gravel and a rather uncomfortable looking spikey plant (which I replaced with something a my female would find more "lounge" worthy.) The divider simple slides in and out of two groves on the double hex. I've heard of some people glueing it place, but I wouldn't bother. It fits pretty snug in the slot if you ever decide to use it.

AS for previous expericance with having a betta in a larger community tank...mine seem to like the smaller tanks more. I had my female in my five gallon hex with a pair of guppies, and she definately did not like the current that the filter put out. She'd swim inot it and get pushed nearly to the bottom before she could right herself and swim out of it. Once she got used to hit she would hang out at the top most of the time. She never bothered the guppies though. I've heard males are ALOT more aggressive though when it comes to a community tank.
