i have borrowed my mates canon eos digital rebel xti so i can get some good shots of my oscars. ive got the 18-55mm lens and a portrait lens. ive been getting thge best results with the portrait lens . now im a photography numpty so i could use a bit of advice . so far the best shots ive got have been with the dial set to "av" and the f stop on 4 with white balance on flourecent light . anybody with some sound knowledge of dlsr that can explain in idiot terms how to best set the camera up for the best results ( without flash) would be greatly appreciated.

Get a good tripod, sit the camera on the tripod. If possible, switch it to auto-ISO and to set exposure of 1/125-1/250 and auto-aperture.

For photography with flash: set ISO to 200, aperture to desired (usually 5.6 or so) and exposure to 1/125-1/250, flash to auto fill.

For best results in both cases, RAW should be use used format as it contains more information than JPEGs. But most people don't know how to work with them, so high-quality JPEG (the one with the smooth curve) is best. If working with RAW, then it can help to overexpose by 1/3 stop.

hmmm im lost already lol. ive seen raw in the options , but how do i set the exposure ?

Av = aperture priority
Tv = shutter priority
M = manual (you set both yourself)

Raw is just a file format like JPG, but without compression. its the only way to see the full quality of your pictures. but you take pictures in the same way.mind you the images a very big, in comparison to JPG images. but thats where the quality comes from.

ahh i see . after a bit of fiddling , i have found a happpy medium that gives me good enough shots . just as well as he wants his camera back today lol . thanks for the help everybody .
