I was thinking today, could you possibly have a DSB in an external such as my ehiem 2224? I mean it would have to have some kind of sheet to stop the sand being sucked up. But could it be done you think?

Any1 think what type of sheet to use?

HMMMMM..... :shifty:

The idea of a DSB is to have thew water running across the top of the sand bed and the heavier molecules in the water are drawn into the bed by osmosis. Using an external would be like creating a sand filter used in large commercial systems and swimming pools (big blue things with bells on) still good at filtration however the end product of most of these is NO3 :X :/

Depending on the design of the cannister then a DSB is perfectly possible.

I used to run two fluval x04 filters (before they failed being the hunks of crap that all fluval filters are) as remote DSB on my first two SW set ups. So long as the inlet and the outlet are both very high it is ok. (the Eheim Classic designs won't work so well as the water flows right through the media from bottom to top on those).

I just made sure there was a couple of inches of live rock rubble on top of the sand to stop it being pulled up too much. I found that so long as I used larger aragonite sand (1-2mm grain size) then it was absolutely fine. YMMV

Ah i see. Well was mainly just an idea as it would be cool to try out but tbh im not willing atm to do that. But thanks for your replies.
