Hi,

My friend at work, just bought a few fish at the weekend and the two dwarf gouramis that she bought have both died. The other fish are active and appear to be okay

What she described appeared to be dropsy. Should she treat the full tank or wait for any futher fish to get the symtoms?

Water was checked on Friday by me, before buying fish and everything was okay.

I would QT the sick fish, if any, or the rest of the Gouramies as I find they are real sensitive to disease, especially the Dwarf variety. We presently have a male Kiebensis in QT for Dropsy and Popeye (has been there for a week) and have seen no sign of the disease in the rest of the tank, but we are keeping a close eye on the other fish.

When dropsy hit a couple of my platys  a while ago I quarantined the sick ones and none of the other species in the tank got it. NO new fish involved and water seemed fine. Only affected two platys, which sadly died, but one was prety old so.... :/ .

Should not wait for more symptoms as Dropsy can be very nasty

Quarantine sick fish immediately

hopefully with some treatment they will recover

Thanks I will pass on the advice - unfortunately both fish with symptoms are now dead!

But I will make sure that she keeps an eye on the other fish

sorry to hear that, I have not heard of many recovering from Dropsy, as by the time you notice symptoms it is already too late. Good luck with the rest though!
