One of my rasboras is very bloated and has a bristley kind of effect which I thought might be pineconing on a tiny scale? I'll have to strip the tank to get him, they're so shy. Is there anything I can do for him?

Well, managed to get him without having to strip the tank, which makes me sure there's something not right! I've got one from above which shows it quite well. I thought it was some kind of growth at first, but now I think it's scales sticking out.

From the front he looks almost comically enormous.

I have him in a jug for now, but I realise that's far from ideal. Reading up seems to indicate it may be too late for him :( And that it's only contagious if other fish eat the dead body?
Just checked water stats
temp 24C
ammonia 0 nitrite 0

Once scales stick out its the last stage of dropsy organ failure.
All you can do for the fish is epson salt baths to help draw the fluids out. Maybe try a bacterial med.

Thanks wilder. So you think it is dropsy then?

It's so tiny it's hard to tell for definite, but I think it's scales sticking out and it's really bloated.
I don't have any of the meds suggested. I have myxazin and sterazin and melafix. Any of those worth a try?

You really need a med like anti internal bacteria med by interpet.
Myxazin dosn't treat dropsy.
Melafix is no good. Its only good on external bacteria infections like cuts and wounds.

Right, if he's still with us tomorrow I'll get something for him. I'm thinking of putting him in the tank where my betta has just died. Can you confirm whether it's infectious or not? I want to get another betta soon so don't want that tank infected. Thanks :)

I fish rarely makes it once scales stick out.
Its best to issolate as if the other fish peck at the dead body it can pass on that way.
Just do some water changes before you add another betta fish.

I decided to euthanase. That was not nice :-(

oh honey, when it rains it pours. you are not having a good fishy day
*hugs*
all the best!

No, not my finest fishkeeping hour tonight! let's hope I don't have to that too many times.
Thanks for your help and advice last night wilder :)
