I think my favorite veiltail boy who has been with me longest has dropsy. I noticed last night he was sticking to the bottom of the tank. He was in a weird position, so I actually first thought he was dead. Then he moved and I figured he was just asleep. Today, I checked on him and he was still hanging out at the bottom. I noticed that the scales are sticking out.

My problem is, I live in the Philippines and don't have the medications that are available there. Here are what I have or can find:

Sera medications - baktopur direct
Methylyn blue
Malachite green
Ocean Free medications (from germany-I don't know if you have these there)
Basic pharmacy stuff like Tetracycline, Metronidazole, etc.

Guys, which of these can I use most effectively for my fish? I've read that dropsy is often fatal, but I love this boy and really want to try to save him.

Hi Kittycat ,

Dropsy is often fatal if the fish is not treated early. It is contagious and due care should be exercised to prevent cross infection (i.e. from one betta tank to another).

Treat the fish promptly with Ocean Free® Super Internal Bacteria & Ulcer Away and hope for the best.

Do follow instructions as directed by the medication, keep the water clean and lower the water level if necessary (i.e. if the fish is having difficulty surfacing for air).

I had to euthinise two fish the otherday due to dropsy,
I hope you have better luck, but as D Chia has said it is
often fatal and highly contagious. Survival rate is only around 12%.

Thank you so much, guys. He's still hanging on...

Thank you for all the help, guys. I lost him when I got home tonight. I thought I'd get used to losing fish by now...

He had the best personality and blew the biggest bubble nests...
